Die Metropolregion Sydney gliedert sich offiziell in 38 Local Government Areas (LGA's):
Das Australian Bureau of Statistics rechnet zur Metropolregion Sydney (Sydney Statistical Division) auch Gebiete der Central Coast und Blue Mountains. Dazu gehören die Local Government Areas Blue Mountains, Gosford, Hawkesbury, Sutherland, Wollondilly und Wyong. Die Einteilung in 44 LGA's dient nur statistischen Zwecken.
